Dressing for a Job Interview

With the number of potential employees applying for every position available, the interview process has become vital in allowing you to present yourself in the best light.  One of the most important aspects of the interview you should consider is how you dress.  Dressing for success in an interview just might be that little something extra that helps to get you the job.  Here are some tips to consider when dressing for a job interview:

  • Begin with your personal hygiene.  First impressions are important when you are meeting with prospective employers.  Begin by making sure that you are well groomed.  Start with a shower and finish with a shave.  Using quality men’s shave cream and a quality razor will allow you the closest shave possible for that clean cut look.  Also, when preparing for the interview, it’s a good idea to ensure that your hair is neatly cut and trimmed as well.
  • Choose your attire wisely.  When making that all important choice about what to actually wear to the job interview there are a few things you should consider.  First, consider the company and the actual job position you are applying for.  You want to ensure that you are dressed to represent yourself to meet those specific requirements when you first meet a potential employer.  Second, consider how much more respected and how much more refined dressing in your best helps you to act.  It has been shown that men that dress in suits exhibit much more confidence and class when meeting with others.  The most common interview attire should include a well tailored suit, a business appropriate tie, and fashionable accessories including any jewelry items and footwear.
  • Finally, consider your accessories.  It’s a good idea to carry with you a fashionable case or folder.  This folder should be equipped with paper and pencils so that you can take notes or bring a list of questions with you when in the interview.  An attractive folder also provides a place for you to carry your resume with you.

Whether you are dressing for a six figure job interview or simply applying for an entry level position, the key in dressing for an interview is to make sure that you are presenting your best self possible to any potential employers.  Choosing the appropriate clothing, making sure that you are well-groomed and most importantly coming in with a good attitude will go far in making a good first and lasting impression.  In an environment where casual Fridays and flip-flops have become the norm, it’s important to remember that the way you dress and present yourself at your interview not only lets a potential employer see your best, it also shows them how important you value their time and the employment opportunity they are offering.
